“I might have tacos when I get home,” said East Haven, CT mayor Joe Maturo on Wednesday when asked what he was doing for the Latino community.

On Thursday, Mayor Maturo received 2,000 tacos.

From MSNBC:

The send-the-mayor-a-taco campaign, which took off via tweets, cellphone texts and social-media shares, was organized by Reform Immigration for America, a group that advocates comprehensive immigration reform.

A bulk order of 500 tacos was hand-delivered to the mayor’s office by members of Junta for Progressive Action, a Latino nonprofit in New Haven, Conn. Others texted in individual orders.

In a letter accompanying the bulk delivery, Junta for Progressive Action said:

“These are serious allegations against the state of civic affairs in your community – yet when asked what you personally would be doing to address racial discrimination in East Haven, you made a mockery of the crisis by suggesting that eating tacos is enough to help the Latino community in the wake of this tragedy.

Your subsequent apology isn’t enough to make up for allowing institutionalized racism in a police force and city government.”

Foxconn, the world’s largest electronic component maker (think: Apple, Amazon, Nintendo, Dell, Panasonic… well, you get the point) is not a nice place to work. So rampant have the suicides been that last year the company made workers sign pledges not to kill themselves.

As American consumers ogle over shiny new gadgets at this week’s Consumer Electronic’s Show, the workers that make those products are threatening mass suicide for the horrid working conditions at Foxconn. 300 employees who worked making the Xbox 360 stood at the edge of the factory building, about to jump, after their boss reneged on promised compensation, reports English news site Want China Times. It’s not like this is the first time working conditions at Foxconn have made news outside China. But iPhone and Xbox sales surely haven’t lagged in the wake of those revelations and neither Apple nor Microsoft has done much of anything to fix things.

As The Atlantic Wire points out, this week’s This American Life features a trip to a Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China where approximately 350,000 to 450,000 people are employed.

Like much of the Gulf Coast, Gulfport, Mississippi and its state port (above) were devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. But where there is destruction, there is also opportunity: this was the view of 12 students in SIPA’s MPA program in Environmental Science and Policy. Together, they worked to guide the Port of Gulfport in rebuilding using environmentally, economically, and socially sustainable methods.

The 2011 workshop team comprised Fariya Ali, Peachie Aquino, Jennifer Barbour, Preston Cox, Jin Jin Huang, Joseph Gosselar, Charis Lypiridis, Roberto Leal, Nathan Rudder, Clayton Winter, Anastasia Wright, Hilary Young, and faculty adviser Gail Suchman.

The workshop focused on minimizing the ecological footprint of a 10-mile road connecting the port to the rail and highway systems. The group’s recommendations touched on the fuel used by vehicles, vegetation buffer zones, and the role of the local community.

“I came away understanding what an important issue ports are from an environmental sustainability standpoint,” said Anastasia Wright (MPA ’11). “Even though 90 percent of global trade is conducted by sea, it is still a highly unregulated industry in terms of pollution.”

The students hope the port’s stakeholders will consider their guidelines, even those that are not economically or logistically feasible right now. They believe their recommendations give the Port of Gulfport the potential to be a sustainable Port of the Future.

“We hope the report will be used as an advocacy piece,” say team members Roberto Leal (MPA 11’) and Preston Cox (MPA ‘11). “These recommendations will not only help to construct a better port, but will also include the adjacent low-income Gulfport community in the redevelopment project.”
